Note | Jacob and Magdalena spent their last days in the home of Mary Garst Lockett which Jacob had given her. A picture of this house is provided in the original Garst book (Magdalena was the widow of Rev. John Hinkle). The farm is located 3 1/2 miles southwest of Roanoke, VA., the Star City, surrounded by beautiful mountains, and formerly bordered the highway before a small acreage was sold. A copy of the last will and testament of Jacob Garst I (dated 26 Mar 1850) can be found on pages 222 and 223 of the original Garst book. For the benefit of those who do not own a copy, the will reads: WILL OF JACOB GERST I - Will Book 1, Page 87 "In the Name of God Amen: "I, Jacob Garst Senr. being of Sound mind memory and understanding and impressed with the Great uncertinty of Life and the certinty of Death and Being desirus to Dispose of my temporal affairs that after my Death that no contention may arise Relative to the same and So I shall make this my last will and Prair thairfore I Jacob Garst of Roanoke Cty & State of Va. In the presance of us his Phares Armstrong Jacob X Garst (SEAL) Michael T. Hartman mark At Roanoke March Court 1854 "The last Will and Testament of Jacob Garst deceased was this day produced in Court and proved according to law by the oaths of Michael T. Hartman and Phares Armstrong subscribing witnesses thereto, and is ordered to be recorded." In regards to Jacob Frederick (1175), the original Garst book gives his middle initial as "H." Information obtained from research for this book and that of other family researchers, indicates that the "H" as found in the original book is a misprint and should have read "F.' An explanation of this finding is found in the individual family profile of Jacob Frederick. The book entitled, "Early Marriages, Wills, and Some Revolutionary War Records, Botetourt County, Virginia" provides the marriage records of several members of this family. First, it gives the record of Jacob Garst I and his second wife Eve Minter as "Gharst, Jacob, and Eve Minter, dau. Chris Minter-- Dec. 3, 1805. As regards the children, the book reads: "Hinkle, Lot, and Rosanna Gharst, dau. Jacob Gharst-- May 29, 1821; Hartman, John, and Catherine Gharst, dau. Jacob Gharst-- May 14, 1812 (not in agreement with the original Garst book); Clark, George, and Ann Gharst, dau. Jacob Gharst-- Jun. 24, 1820." On page 5 of this same book, there is another entry that reads: "Bartlett, John, and Estha Hinkle, ward and daughter-in-law of Jacob Garst-- April 18, 1813." To add futher confusion to this family profile, the book "Botetourt County Marriages, 1770-1853" provides records showing that Eva Minter was married to Frederick Gharst (1112) on 3 Dec 1805 by minister John Helms. If true, she would have been Frederick's first wife and not the wife of Jacob Garst I (this profile) at all. Obviously, more research needs to be done on the family profiles of Frederick and Jacob. The information contained in the original Garst book concerning Lydia Garst and her dates of marriage contains an apparent discrepancy. On page 205, her date of marriage is given as 1 Nov 1832. Yet, on page 216, it states that she married, first, a Samuel Coon on 27 Oct 1832 and married, second, a Samuel Mason on 14 Mar 1850. Also, on page 216, her year of birth is given as 1766 (the year of birth of her father). It should be noted too, that Lydia had a son, Charles Coon, who was killed in the Civil War. There is an interesting relationship in this family profile. The third wife of Jacob I (117), Magdalena Landers, was the widow of the Rev. John Hinkle. They were the parents of Benjamin Hinkle, who married Sarah Shaver (sister to Polly Shaver who married Jacob Frederick[1175]), and Lot Hinkle, who married Rosina (1178). This indicates that Magdalena Landers Garst was both mother-in-law and step-mother to Rosina, and Rosina and Lot Hinkle were not only man and wife, but also step-brother and sister. The Peffley Supplement, page 327, states that Nicholas Garst (1177) married "Mary Garst." The supplement does not provide any additional information about her background. The book also states that Elizabeth and Catherine were married by the Rev. John Holms with all the rest married by the Rev. Joel Crumpacker. Family records contain a letter from "Mary" dated 12 Feb 1929 that reads "Jacob moved to Botetourt County Virginia in 1780. Later moved futher south (Carolinas or Georgia). In 1850, lived with daughter Mary Lockett in Roanoke, Virginia." (Notes by Joe Garst) |
