Note

Abraham was a farmer and at one time owned 640 acres of land near Salem VA, and now owned by Hollins College for Girls. He sold the land in 1833 and moved to St Joseph County, Indiana, and purchased a farm where South Bend now stands.

The original Garst book gives two different dates of death for
Abraham Garst I. On page 25, it gives his date of death as "Sept. 3,
1838;" on page 225 it states that he died during the very severe
winter of 1835; and then on page 279, a letter written by Henry Clay
Garst states that his father died in the fall of 1838. Records
within the family concerning Katherine Ribble Garst suggest that she
died in the spring of 1841, "when the hyacinths, her favorite flowers
were in bloom." Both are buried in Bowman's Cemetery, located two
 miles east of South Bend.

Kegley's Virginia Frontier, page 541, lists the marriage of Abraham
Garst and Katherine Rebble as taking place in the Tinker Creek-Glade
Creek-Great Lick community in early Botetourt.

The Peffley Supplement, page 328, indicates that Elias Garst was a
Physician in adult life, but does not provide any other information
concerning his wife and family (if any).

The book entitled, "Early Marriages, Wills, and Some Revolutionary
War Records, Botetourt County, Virginia" provides the marriage record
of Barbara Garst. It reads: Stoner, Jacob, and Barbara Gharst, dau.
 Abraham Gharst-- Feb. 12, 1821.

Census records indicate that Abraham was a farmer and lived in
Botetourt Co., VA in the years 1810, 1820 and 1830. Other family
records suggest that he moved from PA to VA in 1780, then moved to
Clark Co., OH, sometime after 1930, then moved to South Bend, IN,
 where he died.

For a very interesting story concerning Katherine Ribble Garst, her
parents, and Abraham's brothers (Frederick I, John Nicholas II, and
Jacob I), read the letter contained within the family profile of
 Henry Clay Garst (119B).
