Note

The name of Jacob's first wife in the early Garst files was given as Sally or Sarah Anna Frantz. However, her given name, based on deed information, was Christine or Christiana--or some variant of that.

According to Betty Crawford Garst (study of Garst Fort at Garstfamily.com) deeds indicate Jacob's wife was a Christianna or Christine. Dwayne Wrightsman has confirmed that Jacob's wife in all of the et ux deeds he checked was some version of Christiana. A message from him dated 28 April 2003:

"The following six et ux deeds of Jacob Garst and wife Christiana can be found at the Botetourt County Circuit Court in Fincastle:

Deed Book 6, page 441 (1798 Deed to Daniel Dillman)

Deed Book 6, page 579 (1798 Deed to Mathias Furrow)

Deed Book 8, page 184 (1803 Deed to Christian Holdeman)

Deed Book 8, page 429 (1804 Deed to Christian Houtz, 40 acres)

Deed Book 8, page 430 (1804 Deed to Christian Houtz, 75 acres)

Deed Book 8, page 468 (1804 Deed to John Bowman)

All six deeds name Jacob's wife as Christine, Christina, Christiana, and/or Christianah. No other name is given in any of the six deeds.

I made copies of the two deeds to Houtz and the one deed to Dillman. The other three I took notes on at the courthouse."

If her name was Christiana, it's possible she was called Anna as some Garst records claim, and if she was a daughter of Michael Frantz, her grandfather was probably Christian Frantz (see notes under Michael Frantz II) for whom she was perhaps named.

A number of files give her name as Sally/Salome, but this may be the result of confusion with the Sally Frantz who was the second wife of Frederick Garst II.

It is also a given in Garst lore that Anna was a Frantz, one of 5 children of a Michael Frantz who married Garsts. This has, however, not been proven as of August 2004, and until it is, her surname remains unknown. (Notes by Karen Dale)
