Note

FATHER: 117; MOTHER: 117s

Although the fact that Christopher Garst of Carroll Co. GA was born in Virginia indicated he belonged to the descendants of Theobald Garst, there was no evidence to support that. Comparisons of Christopher's birth year (always 1804-1805 in census records) and names to the Virginia Garsts in William Tell Garst's "Our Garst Family in America" suggested that he was Christian, the son of Jacob Garst, but, again, there was no proof until the following document was found in the possession of one of Christopher's descendants. Although it is unsigned and undated, it seems likely this "history" was written by Christopher's son, James Marion Garst for his son, James Eli Garst, probably about 1900. It is entitled "A Brief Sketch of the Ancestors of J.E. Garst."

"Your Great Grandfather on your father's side was named Jacob Garst. He was a German by birth but emigrated to this country and settled in Virginia near where the city of Roanoke now stands. He came to America a few years before the beginning of the Revolutionary War and died about the year 1850, being 93 years old. He owned a good farm and a mill, and was a man of influence. He was married three times and had fifteen children. Your Grand Father Garst was from the second marriage. Your Great Grandmother was born in America of German descent. Her name was Hinkle. Her life was short. This is all that is known of her.

Your Great Grandfather on the mother's side was named John Coltharp. He principally lived and died in Monroe County East Tenn. He was 91 years old. He was a farmer and stockraiser. Your Great Grandmother on the mother's side was named Horner. She was of pure French descent.

Your Grandfather on the father's side was named Christopher Garst. He was born in Virginia in Roanoke County on the 18th of May 1805 and died in Carroll County Georgia in 1875 being 78 years of age. Your Grand Mother on the father's side was born in Blount County East Tenn in the year 1810 and died in Carroll County GA in the year 1870, being 65 years of age. Her maiden name was Sarah Coltharp."

The claim that Christopher was the son of Magdalena Landers Hinkle is in error. The birthdate of 18 May 1805 indicates that Christopher was the son of Jacob's first wife. However, since she died before Jacob's Dec 1805 marriage to Eve Minter, it's quite possible she died when Christopher was born. Since Jacob married Magdalena Hinkle Jun 1807, she would have been the only mother Christopher ever knew. To reinforce the connections indicated in the letter, note that Christopher had sons JACOB F. and PHILIP HINKLE.

His name was never NICHOLAS Christian as some Garst files have it. That name was the result of a missing comma in an abstract of Jacob Garst's will. His given name probably was Christian; however, in every document from his marriage in 1825 to hisdeath in 1881, he is called Christopher, an Anglicized version of Christian.

Settlement in Carroll Co. GA: Christopher was in Carroll Co. for the 1830 census. He was purchasing land in district six by 1832 when he bought 61 acres from a sheriff's sale 2 March. He sold this same lot #61 to his brother-in-law, James Coltharp, 9 Jul 1834: 202 1/2 acres for $201.12/12.

On Carroll Co. GA census 1830-1870.

Note

Descendants of Christopher Garst of eastern TN and Carroll Co. GA always knew that he was"born in Virginia" and were told he ran away from home as a teenager, but when the original "Our Garst Family in America" by William Tell Garst was published,he did not appear. A number of descendants independently determined he was probably the son of Jacob Garst in Virginia and his first wife, the Christian named in Jacob's will. The name was close; he was roughly the right age; he named sons Jacob and Philip Hinkle, both names connecting him to Jacob Garst. However, not until 2002 did a document surface that indicated the actual tie between Christopher Garst of Georgia and Jacob Garst of Botetourt/Roanoke Virginia.

18 July 2002: the following document was found in the possession of Jarvis S. Garst of Somerville Tx, nephew of J. E. (James Eli) Garst. It is unsigned and undated, but it was probably written by James Marion Garst, James Eli's father, about 1900. There are obvious errors in the details, as there are in any oral history passed down from one generation to the next, but there are also many details which present strong evidence its writer was knowledgeable about the broad outline of his family's history. It is entitled "A Brief Sketch of the Ancestors of J.E. Garst."

"Your Great Grandfather on your father's side was named Jacob Garst. He was a German by birth but emigrated to this country and settled in Virginia near where the city of Roanoke now stands. Christopher first appears in the records of Jefferson Co. TN, Dec 1825, when he married Sarah Coltharp. They moved to Carroll Co. GA before the 1830 census and are enumerated in every census from 1830-1870 (Christopher should also be in the 1880 census but the record has not surfaced).

SETTLEMENT IN CARROLL CO. GA: By 1830. By 1832, Christopher and Sarah were already members of the New Hope Baptist Church (on the Douglas Co. line) APRIL 21, 1832. "BROTHER" GARST mentioned in minutes.

In 1843, Christopher and Sarah Garst received a letter of dismissal from New Hope when they apparently moved to another part of Carroll Co (near Villa Rica) where they became members of the newly formed Macedonia Baptist church.
