Description from commanding officer's log book (in Carrolton lib)

This log book, makes several references to the sick and wounded at the 'great' Chimborazo Hospital at Richmond that was built in 1862 on a bluff overlooking the James River. The buildings were destroyed, but the area is now the site of Chimborazo Park, Headquarters Building/Visitors Center of Richmond National Battlefields.

Garst, Jacob F., Private Enlisted at Carrollton August 15, 1861, by Captain Powell. Age 17. Present, Aug-Dec 1862. Date of Death May 7, 1863, at Hospital #1. Wounded mortally in the mouth at Chancellorsville May 3, 1863. Effects left: 15 cents and sundries. No other records. When killed he was 22 years old. A farm boy from the Fairplay District-Flint Hill. He lived before the war with his father Chris (53), a farmer born in VA, and mother Sarah (53) born in Tenn., and 6 siblings.
