| Note | The only record I had on Frances was her name listed in the 1850 census. However, the following note (Nov. 2003) from James Carroll raised the possibility that she did marry and move to Arkansas and might explain why her younger sisters, Annabelle and Nancy, went to AR in 1884. "Also, I found a piece of paper in the family Bible or somewhere else in the trunk giving the birthdates of Archi Medes Carroll, and his wife. It calls his wife what looks like V.F. Garst, and says they were married on November, 19, 1850. It says she was born on March 15, 1831. Could this be the Frances Garst who was shown to be 18 in the 1850 census? The birthdate fits. Could father and son have married sisters who were 21 years apart?" Having seen this piece of paper (which was "recoppied" by James Burrus Carrroll, 12 May 1938, it definitely says V.F. Garst. It seems unlikely James Carroll would confuse his mother's name "Garst" with any other. Transcribed marriage records in Carroll Co. GA call Archimedes wife Lavinia Garrett and Garet; however a copy of the original indicates it was Garst. In the 1860 census, Sevier Co. AR, there is what appears to be A. Carroll with wife "Vany" and three children, Sarah, born ca. 1851, and Mary, b. ca. 1853, both in GA. In 1870, her name is "Vaney." One Carroll researcher reports that Archi Medes'first wife was Lavinia Garrett. Garst and Garrett are often confused, but the nickname "Vaney" (for Lavinia) occurs several times in the Coltharp/Horner family. Frances Vaney Carroll is listed as a member of the Macedonia Baptist church in Carroll Co. GA in its membership records, along with all the Garsts (most of the Carrolls were Methodist). |
