Note

Mary Hager was the daughter of Jonathan Hager and Sarah White who moved to Carroll Co. GA just before 1840 from Lincoln Co. NC. In 1860, they were living next to the Christopher Garst family. Jonathan Hager, then aged 50, enlisted in Cobbs LegionApril 1861, was discharged the following year and died in Carroll Co. within a month after his discharge.

Mary's birthdate from 1900 census and death date unconfirmed (no readable tombstone, but probably buried at Macedonia Baptist Church in Sand Hill GA).

No sign of Mary in the 1870 census, but family stories say she taught school at Hickory Level in Carroll Co. GA before her marriage to Philip Garst. (notes by Karen Dale)
