Note | Obit JACK LEO GARST, 73, of Memphis died Thursday, July 27, 2006 at St. Francis Hospital after a long illness. A celebration of his life was held at Central Church in Collierville on Monday, July 31, 2006 at 12 noon, with visitation from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Burial will be on Tuesday, August 1 at 10 a.m. at the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery. Jack was born in Roanoke, Virginia, served in the U.S.Marine Corps during the Korean conflict, received his Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech, followed later by a Juris Doctor degree from University of Memphis. He retired as Chief of the Real Estate Division of the U.S. Corps of Engineers. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sarah Matthews Garst; three sons, David Nelson Garst,and wife Kathryn of Franklin, TN, Matthew William Garst of Seattle, WA, and John Blair Garst and wife Kimberly, of Nesbit, MS; as well as two daughters, Ann Garst Taylor and husband, Steven, of Charlotte, NC and Helen "Ginny" Garst Woods, of Dallas, TX; in addition, Mr. Garst is survived by three grandsons, David Tyler Woods, Philip Gregory Taylor, and Hunter Davidson Garst; and three granddaughters, Sara Elizabeth Taylor, Kathryn Victoria Garst, and Juliette Matthews Garst; twosisters, Suzanne Garst Glass of Radford, VA and Nancy Garst Nichols, Germantown, TN; brothers-in-law R.Gerald Glass, James R. Nichols, Arthur N.Matthews, Jr. and wife Bettie Jean of Poquoson, VA, James F. Matthews and wife JoAnne, of Los Altos, CA, and John C. Matthews and wife Judy of Martinsville, VA, and sister-in-law Susan Matthews Dressler and husband Sam, of York, SC as well as many devoted nieces and nephews. Jack was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends but we know and rejoice that he is at peace with his Lord, The family requests that any memorial be sent to Central Church.
